our mission
Rejoice in our common threads.
We connect fiber artists with extraordinary American-made and -milled yarns, feeding health and vibrancy back into the whole knitting circle: animal, farmer, miller, maker.
Why we exist
Small American fiber makers are producing extraordinary yarn, and most knitters never get the chance to squish it. Hundreds of them are tucked away on farms and in family mills, doing slow, careful work.
We built Indie Yarn Co. so you can find them in one place. Every skein here has an origin story and quality we checked ourselves.
I want every maker to rejoice in our common threads.
What makes the cut
- Sheep to skein. Fiber raised and milled in the U.S.
- Finished yarn, ready for your needles.
- Natural fibers only. No synthetic blends, not even a little nylon.
- No superwash for now.
- Small batch and vetted for consistent quality and transparency.
A few honest exceptions: some historic American mills do so much heavy lifting for the fiber industry that we carry them too. We label every yarn with where it was grown and where it was milled, so you always know.
What we mean by “sustainable”
When we say sustainable, we mean: fiber grown and milled in the U.S. by makers we’ve personally vetted for animal welfare, environmentally responsible processing, and honest dealing with the people in the chain.
Dye methods are still murky industry-wide, so we tell you what we know and don’t know, skein by skein. Where we can’t verify something, we say so on the product page instead of rounding up.
Quality over quantity
We’d rather you buy two beautiful, long-lasting skeins than ten you’ll forget about. That’s why our shelves are curated, not crowded.
You are welcome here
Knitting belongs to everyone. Whoever you are and however you knit, you’ll be treated with respect here. We ask the same of everyone in our circle: customers, partners, and us.
